Lomond and Argyll Advocacy Service have been delivering advocacy services to people in West Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute council areas for over 20 years. Initially focussing on those with a statutory need for Advocacy under the Mental Health Act and further supporting adults with a learning disability and people in the local community, our service has grown to cover a wide range of individual need.
18 months ago we began a pilot project in parts of Argyll and Bute to support adults with substance use issues to be heard and have their rights upheld as part of their recovery journey. Find out more about our project.
Building on this success, we are delighted to begin a Rights Based Advocacy Service (substances) in West Dunbartonshire. We are looking for a part time (30 hour/week) Advocate with the confidence, experience and credibility to work alongside those who are seeking help with their recovery but find obstacles in their way or whose voice is not being heard, or rights upheld.
Job share or applications for fewer hours will be considered.
£24,621 to £27,017 (pro rata)
What is Advocacy?
Our advocates are rights based – your role will be to offer information (but not advice) enable the individual to be heard – either through speaking on their behalf or by enabling them to do so themselves and to support their rights. The advocate’s focus is the person, their wishes, views and rights.
The successful candidate will be able to form positive relationships with those in or seeking recovery and with other professionals and services; from NHS staff, to Police and Criminal Justice staff, Psychiatrists, Housing providers and Social Workers and all the other professionals who become involved in someone’s life.
You will support the individuals to navigate this world, be heard and to feel heard and to have their rights respected as they may progress their recovery journey. With the support of the wider organisation and experienced colleagues you will receive a full induction. You will be asked to manage a caseload and to be flexible in your approach.
The successful candidate will have a commitment to upholding individuals’ rights, a willingness to learn, be non judgemental and have the interpersonal skills to develop trust and leave the individual “feeling heard” and respected, whatever their views or perspective.
LAAS core hours of work are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. but some flexibility may be required.
